Calico Wallpaper, founded by Rachel and Nick Cope in Red Hook, is a labor of love. The company grew out of an interest in traditional, centuries-old marbleizing techniques from Turkey and Japan. What started as a few paper samples in their Brooklyn apartment is now a full-fledged studio with a veritable laboratory to experiment and create the stunning wall papers.
The one-of-a-kind installations appeal to me in their sumptuous colors and textures that completely alter the feeling of the rooms in which they are applied. The non-repeating patterns are created by hand, photographed and then enlarged to fit each specific wall, each one a work of art.
When you marry traditional techniques and modern design interesting and beautiful things can happen. Calico is no exception.
